From a very early age Dr Austin Wade has been interested in computers. With his father’s business taking off, the pile of enquiries awaiting costing was getting bigger by the day. The time-consuming nature of preparing quotations prompted Victor Wade to purchase an early micro-computer and challenge his son to learn to program. At the tender age of 10, Austin wrote the program for the company’s first ever computer-aided tendering process.

“It was something I really enjoyed “he says. “It was quite sophisticated for its day encompassing factors such as materials, speeds, feeds and part-off widths. The program is still used in the office everyday ad even though it has been re-written several times since, some elements are still recognisable from the first version. “

This, together with the addition of the CNC technology, has helped cut lead-times at Bailey and Wade and Anchor Inserts considerably.
